Organizing Culture Change Efforts

Cultures tend to be highly complex and resistant to change. To manage this complexity, it is useful to organize the change effort into phases. The Normative Systems Culture Change Process was developed so that cultural members can join together to bring about positive and lasting change.

The Normative Systems Culture Change Process

Just as the word culture originates from the biological concept of cultivation, the culture change process has similarities to successful farming practices.

  • In Phase I, the culture is examined to see what ideas are likely to grow in the culture. Leadership is engaged and goals are determined.

  • In Phase II, the seed of a new cultural ideas are planted in the minds of the members of the culture. Employees at all levels are informed about the initiative and asked to participate.

  • In Phase III, the new cultural practices are nurtured. Individual change is supported by cultural touch points.

  • In Phase IV results are harvested, success is celebrated and plans are set for building on the progress that has been achieved.
