Supportive Cultures are Key to Productivity

Don Cohen and Laurence Prusak make a business case for addressing work culture. Their book In Good Company sites extensive research in support of a strong link between culture and bottom-line business goals such as innovation, service, productivity and profitability.

Supportive cultures enhance business outcomes by producing:

  • Increased knowledge sharing
  • Lower transaction costs
  • Lower employment costs
  • Greater coherence of action

We often behave in accordance with cultural forces without even thinking about it. For example, we drive on a particular side of the road, sit in a particular seat at dinner time or use particular words to get a point across without thinking these behaviors are influenced by the culture. These behaviors are largely controlled by culture.
